The opening of the new Jaffer Modern art gallery in Green Point, Cape Town, comes at a time when human connection and congregation are sought after but limited due to social distancing. The gallery has responded to the times by mounting an inaugural exhibition entitled GATHERING: A Community of Portraits and offering visitors the option of private, one-on-one guided walkabouts that are free of charge.
GATHERING: A Community of Portraits was curated with the intention of exploring our deep desire to commune and to showcase the diversity, cultures and commonalities of the African continent. Expect to be captivated by a plethora of intriguing portraits selected by guest curator, Margie Murgatroyd.
The multiplicity and diversity of artistic voices create a variety of avenues and perspectives to be explored and discovered.
Private gallery tours will offer insight into these perspectives while allowing for personal interpretation of the works and interaction with the guest curator. It is a wonderful opportunity to delve into the alchemy of curating an exhibition and simultaneously see the concept realised.
The private walkabouts offer the opportunity to uncover the narrative of the exhibition through its various themes. From the importance of cattle to humans, to gender, identity, belonging and ‘home’, GATHERING pays homage to different aspects of cultures across Africa.
The exhibited works range from photography to painting to mixed media and sculptural pieces. The exhibition features outpourings of creativity from South African Masters, such as Peter Clarke and Cecil Skotnes, and contemporary greats, such as Colbert Mashile and Diane Victor.
GATHERING also showcases works from other well-known artists, including Clare Menck, Koloki Nyamai, Ed Suter, Polly Alakija, Eris Silke, Sibusiso Duma and many more, including new emerging names.
GATHERING runs until 14 February 2021. The gallery is open to the public and no appointments are necessary for unguided viewings. Private walkabouts are strictly by appointment. To make a booking for a one-on-one tour, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
The gallery’s regular opening hours are from Monday to Friday, between 09h00 and 17h00, and on Saturdays and Sundays, between 09h00 and 13h00. All necessary COVID-19 safety protocols are adhered to at all times. The gallery is situated on the 7th floor of the Vïb Cape Town hotel, located at 181 Main Road, Green Point, Cape Town.
