We believe wine is shaped by human hands as much as by land.” This is human terroir in its truest form: knowledge passed down and care repeated season after season.

A story shaped by people

Directed and produced by Rory Appleton and Rubert Fitchet of Sledgehammer Studio, the film reflects Groot Constantia as a working estate shaped by the people who care for it every day.

“Groot Constantia functions like a huge family. As much as the place is a part of the people working there, the people are a crucial part of the place,” said Appleton, the director at Sledgehammer Studio.

Craft, care and continuity

From vineyard to cellar, the estate reflects a philosophy grounded in preservation and respect. Vines are tended with patience, and winemaking is shaped by refined practice. As a WWF Conservation Champion, the soil, water and biodiversity of the land are conserved to ensure what was inherited can be passed on.

“Groot Constantia is a beautiful estate that is part of South Africa’s story,” said Fitchet, the director at Sledgehammer Studio. “This film was our way of honouring its human terroir, and the care that shapes and carries it forward.”

A national treasure to Be shared

Central to the story is the idea that a national treasure belongs to no single owner or era.
