Esa Vino Winery – a passion project

Wife and mother of one, Gugulethu Tshabangu, launched her beverage brand in September 2021 with the introduction of Esa Vino Winery and its Simply Red, Simply Rosé and Simply White range.

After her son turned one, she said, she needed something to keep her busy and occupied besides being a mother and a wife. She needed a passion project, and thus Esa – derived from the name of her son, Isaak – was born.

The wines all originate from the Western Cape, and include: Simply Red (2015 Bordeaux Blend Premium; 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon; 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon; 2020 Merlot; 2020 Pinotage; 2021 Semi-Sweet Shiraz; 2022 Shiraz), Simply Rosé (Esa Rosé; Esa Rosé Dry; 2021 Pinotage Rosé), Simply White (2020 Chardonnay; 2022 Chardonnay; 2020 Chenin Blanc; 2022 Chenin Blanc).

Commenting on the representation of people of colour in the wine industry in South Africa, Tshabangu said that she believes there is enough representation, “despite this being a new industry that we have ventured into”.

“For the longest time, the wine industry was seen as a luxury and for those with big names,” she said, “but now the narrative has changed and we ‘people of colour’ can now have a [seat] at the table and expose our communities to such fine wines.”

Her advice to aspiring winemakers is to always remember why they started the journey.

“It isn’t an easy boat to ride, but consistency is key. Also, remember to begin with the end in mind.”

Quick-fire Q&A

What is your favourite varietal and why?

It is [Esa’s] 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon; I love the smoothness that comes from the dark fruit flavor. The dark rich flavor makes it the perfect escape.

If you could have the ultimate food-and-wine pairing, what would that be?

With the season change, that means a change of tastebuds; therefore, it would have to be some tarts and seafood paired with chilled white wine on any given day.

If you could sit down for a wine tasting with anyone – whether they’re still alive or no longer with us – who would that be and why?

It would have to be my late brother, Mpendulo “Mosi” Tshabangu. He believed that I was destined for greater things and to run my own business in the near future.
