Women who create: Marcia Tyobeka

Marcia Tyobeka is the head chef of De Hoop Collection.

Marcia is the proud mother of twins. She was born and bred in Rustenburg, but the bush has always had a special place in her heart. She enjoys big family gatherings where they eat and laugh until their stomachs hurt.

Did you always know that you wanted to be a chef?

I discovered my passion for cooking in high school through home economics. After school I went on to study at Vector College and qualified as a chef.

Where do you draw inspiration for your dishes?

Sometimes from my mother and grandmother for hearty, home-cooked meals, and sometimes from my mentor and good friend, Judy Dyson.

One of Marcia’s creations. Yummy!

Take us through your creative processes: whether it’s designing menus or coming up with new dishes?

Coming up with new dishes where I can put my own signature on it. I try and evoke a “eat-with-your-eyes” experience.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

Sharing my knowledge with other chefs and training young chefs, especially the scullers.

Name 3 women you admire and why.

My mother, grandmother and Judy Dyson (magogo). Judy is my mentor – I have known her for a very long. We have worked together in places like Madikwe Game Reserve, Tuningi Safari Lodge, Motswiri Private Safari Lodge, Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge, Thakadu River Camp and here at De Hoop Collection.

Any advice for other women?

Never give up. You are stronger than you think.
