I spent one night at the contemporary, eclectic and oh-so-central Hippo Boutique Hotel in Cape Town, a member of Cape Country Routes.
As an itinerant traveller, I arrive at the luxury boutique hotel late on a Friday afternoon, the drizzle of summer rain comforting, and I check into my Executive Suite. Upon entering, I am amazed at the space – both the size and the ambience – and excitedly move towards the window where I take in the incredible views of the Mother City. Though partly enveloped by clouds, the iconic Table Mountain and Signal Hill in the distance stand tall in all their glory.
The loft-style suite is made up of a spacious kitchen, complete with a dining room table (perfect for when you want to have your meals indoors, as opposed to going out); a living room with a massive two-seater leather couch; and heading up the stairs you’ll find the bedroom with a king-size bed and an en-suite bathroom.
At this 4-star graded boutique hotel, you’ll find everything you need to make your stay as comfortable as possible: coffee and tea station, microwave, kitchen utensils and flatscreen television. The hotel also boasts a superb swimming pool, perfect for relaxing and cooling down in Cape Town’s sweltering summer heat.
I put my bags down and take a walk around, all the while admiring the incredible art, which encapsulates the cosmopolitan nature of the city – a diverse array of works depicting all walks of life.
I head upstairs where I opt for a quick nap and a shower before heading out for supper at Thali Restaurant with the rest of the group. We spend the evening laughing and talking – hmmmms and ahhhhhs weaved in between conversations – the food, tapas-style Indian cuisine, mouthwatering.
You see, one of the great things about Hippo Boutique Hotel is definitely its central location. Situated in Park Road in Gardens, you are a stone’s throw away from the vibrant and popular Kloof, Bree and Long streets with an array of restaurants and shops to choose from. Mere minutes from the CBD, you can opt for a day of shopping or ambling through the myriad of art galleries in the city. A visit to the Iziko Museum is another culturally enriching experience, as well as to the colourful and buzzling Bo-Kaap. Another favourite leisure activity is to hop on board the Table Mountain Aerial Cable Way, which is currently running a half-price November special.
A stay at the Hippo is definitely recommended – especially for the peripatetic traveller looking for central, luxury accommodation in Cape Town at a fraction of the cost.
