Cosmetic dentistry – kneed-to-knows

I chatted to Dr Norman Cahi about the ins and outs of cosmetic dentistry.

What is the status quo of cosmetic dentistry in SA?

South Africa follows global trends, and cosmetic dentistry is very sought after – especially teeth bleaching, which is the cornerstone of all cosmetic dental procedures. Who doesn’t want whiter teeth ?

Can you comment on some of the trends in cosmetic dentistry?

  •  Active aligners (instead of braces)
  • Teeth bleaching – not toilet bowl white
  • Digital smile design

What do people need to know in advance if they wish to have procedures done?

  • Have realistic expectations of what you want
  • Be in touch with what your wants are and then be prepared to take advice from dental professionals
  • Know what your budget constraints are
  • Be aware of any time restrictions, e.g. an upcoming wedding

What are the costs involved (on average)

It varies greatly, depending on the treatment plan and how far the patient is willing to go to get their perfect smile. Teeth bleaching is the only procedure excluded from medical aid reimbursement. Most other procedures are covered partially by the medical aid, provided you belong to a top scheme.

What are some of the benefits of having cosmetic dentistry done?

  • Confidence
  • Self-esteem
  • Happiness
  • Personal, professional success  – a good 1st impression
  • Health
  • Beauty
  • Vitality
  • Youthfulness
  • Warm smile

Any drawbacks?

None – as long as your expectations are managed and you know exactly what you are agreeing to. Reversal is not possible.

What advice do you have for people wishing to have cosmetic dentistry?

Today there is simply no reason to live with a broken smile, one that is less than beautiful and appealing. Your smile tells the world who you are.
